If you’re like me, you love wearing perfume but sometimes feel underappreciated by those around you.
You might walk into a room wearing your favorite scent, but no one seems to notice, or worse yet, they mention how much they dislike the smell!
Is it the perfume itself, or am I doing something wrong?
In this blog post, I’ll explore some possible reasons why people might not be complimenting your perfume and offer some tips on how to change that.
So read on, perfume lovers, and find out why no one is complimenting your scent!
You probably sprayed too much or too little
Have you ever doused yourself in your favorite perfume, only to have no one compliment you on it? You’re not alone. When you spray a lot of perfume on yourself, people not only smell you but they can smell you – I mean they can detect your true desire – to wow everyone – and that translates into a desperate cry for attention.
They can’t pass the OMG look at me, ‘notice me’ – so they are taking the opposite approach and don’t say anything.
Sometimes people can even feel very upset physically from staying near someone who has a lot of perfume (especially in closed places, cars, public transportation, restaurants, offices, etc..)
If you are doing the opposite and using a little or faint scent then it will be hard for people to smell you, you simply won’t make any impression.

How to fix that?
The right amount is a very elusive thing but there are some things you can do:
- If you are wearing an E.D.P ( EAU DE PARFUM) type of fragrance it means that this perfume is relatively more concentrated (compared to E.D.T) so be sure to spray less.
- Some families of perfumes are more heavily scented (not noticed) than others like flowers – white florals, roses, or spices – vanilla.
With these families, a little goes a long way. If you are not sure to which family your perfume belongs – check on Fragrantica. - If you are using fresh and soapy perfumes most of the time you probably don’t like the heavy smell of perfume around you so don’t be surprised you are not getting a lot of compliments since these perfumes tend to fade very easily from light, to begin with.

It is not age-appropriate
Sometimes we enjoy a specific scent that does not align with our overall appearance or more accurately with our energy or vibes.
Perfumes convey so much information to those around us and when there is a gap between what we smell and what we see – we will get fewer compliments on our perfume.
Some scents are commonly attributed to different properties for example – the smell of roses has always been perceived as outdated since roses were once used in so many perfumes as the only ingredient (and not rightly so because in recent years great perfumes are made with roses).
Sweet scents are considered young scents, so if you choose a very sweet perfume that reminds people of parties and youthful spirit and you are somewhere else in life – this gap produces something that the brain has a hard time explaining as if something is wrong in this picture so people will have a hard time flattering you.
It is a fragrance that doesn’t match your skin chemistry
Our lifestyle, the food we eat, our sweat, different skin issues – all of these things are affecting our body odor and, therefore the scent we spray ourselves.
When we buy perfume online or in a store and don’t test it or test it only on a tester stick – we won’t know how it will smell on us.
We spray it on our skin and something just doesn’t work but we love the scent of it, and many times we already bought it so we decide to use it.
And nothing! nothing, no one is sending our way even half a compliment.
The funny thing – is we will be the last to notice that we stink not smell wonderful.
Everybody has it
If you like to follow the latest trend in perfumes – you are probably not the only one in your area who ran to buy the right scent for the moment- which means everyone has it.
When people smell the same perfume over and over all the time
on every girl, they start to hate it or don’t smell it anymore.
This is the curse and blessing of a very trendy perfume – on the one hand, It appeals to the tastes of many, is a crowd-pleaser, and, on the other hand, it gets tired quickly if everyone around you wears it.
It is too unique
If you’re like me, then you probably love to order perfumes online and explore all kinds of scents.
You are on a quest to find that special scent, the one thing that will wow you.
Then you know how much fun it is to search for a niche perfume.
Such perfumes have ‘interesting’ scents, ones that you rarely meet.
Sometimes scents that are too unique or special are hard to like (especially if you are not a die-hard perfume lover).

This is not customary in your culture
In some cultures, commenting about someone’s perfume is considered rude or just something unacceptable.
I have a French girlfriend who goes crazy every time she is asked what perfume she is wearing. Though it is a compliment, she feels it’s an invasion of her privacy and destroys her mystery.
So like many things in life – a compliment is also a culture-dependent thing.
You use perfumes from the opposite sex
Some people view wearing perfume traditionally associated with the opposite sex unfavorably, feeling embarrassed or at a loss for words. It clashes with their beliefs and expectations, leaving them confused.
